"We need to work together to ensure that future generations have the same resources we did," highlighted Fábio Tatsubô, head of the Department of Public Policies for Sustainable Development Goals (Depods/OTC) at Santos City Hall, during a lecture to employees at Marimex terminals. This year, the organization took a significant step in its journey by becoming a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact and signing the ESG Manifesto, a commitment to the cause formalized by the Port Authority of Santos, solidifying its position as the newest member of these initiatives towards a more sustainable future.
Concern for the future of Earth has grown over time, driven by climate change. To address these challenges, the United Nations created the 2030 Agenda almost a decade ago, a global plan aimed at improving conditions for the planet by establishing 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the private sector, initiatives like the UN Global Compact and the ESG Manifesto play important roles in this endeavor. While the Global Compact encourages ethical and responsible practices, the ESG Manifesto translates these principles into concrete criteria, guiding corporate decisions and sustainable investments.
Driven by these issues, local companies, especially port-related ones, are increasingly taking socio-environmental responsibility in their respective regions, through actions, conferences, and the implementation of practices. In this vein, on December 5th, Marimex invited the current head of Depods at Santos City Hall, Fábio Tatsubô, to give an awareness lecture on the SDGs to all employees, both in-person and remotely. "Today, port companies are important players, alongside the city hall, for social and environmental actions," states Tatsubô. "The port has its environmental impacts, but these organizations can work in synergy to carry out actions that improve the environment and society."

Fábio emphasizes the importance of organizations formalizing their sustainable practices. "We are going through a very concerning process, as we only have 3 years to take effective action against climate change. Therefore, for a company to be a signatory of the Global Compact and ESG Manifesto is fundamental for it to bring socio-environmental impact actions to society. These are local actions that will truly achieve global goals," states the SDG specialist.
According to Santos City Hall, in 2024, the city stood out in the Sustainability Ranking, achieving leadership in environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) practices and ranking third in the fulfillment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the municipal level. In this new phase for the company, after signing the ESG Manifesto and becoming a signatory of the UN Global Compact, Marimex takes on new socio-environmental responsibilities by integrating more sustainable practices, driving positive impacts on society, and strengthening its commitment as a national company.
